Laura from Garden Answer’s Spring Pond Cleaning

In July 2023, we had the pleasure of building a beautiful pond for Laura from Garden Answer. As with any new ecosystem pond, the first couple of years can be challenging as the ecosystem works to find its balance. In Laura's case, string algae had taken over the pond, detracting from its natural beauty.

To help Laura restore her pond to its former glory, our fellow Certified Aquascape Contractor, Chris from Green Source, stepped in to assist with the cleaning process. Together, they tackled the string algae, which had become a dominant presence in the pond.

The first step was to partially drain the pond and begin to remove the unsightly algae from the water. Once the majority of the string algae was removed, it was time to move the fish to their temporary home, and then break out the pressure washer to work on the tougher algae that was clinging to the rocks. And Laura was happy to see that all 11 fish were accounted for and healthy!

But cleaning the pond was only half the battle. To prevent future algae blooms and maintain a healthy ecosystem, several upgrades were installed in Laura's pond. The first of these was an Automatic Dosing System, which ensures that the pond receives the perfect amount of beneficial bacteria and enzymes at regular intervals to keep the water clear and balanced.

Next, a Skimmer box was added to the pond. This mechanical filter helps to remove surface debris, such as leaves and twigs, before they have a chance to sink and decay in the water, becoming food for algae. By keeping the surface clean, the Skimmer box helps to maintain excellent water quality and reduce the likelihood of future algae blooms.

Finally, the IonGen probe was correctly installed in the water . This innovative technology uses copper ions to control algae growth without harming the beneficial bacteria necessary for a healthy pond ecosystem. The Iongen system is a safe and effective way to keep string algae at bay, ensuring that Laura's pond remains a beautiful and thriving ecosystem.

Thanks to Laura for the detailed look at a first year pond, the honest look into dealing with string algae, and for taking the time to share with us all the benefits of a drain and clean on your ecosystem pond! Watch the cleaning video, as well as our playlist of the install from last year, below.
